Why in news?
India hosted the launch of the Responsible Nations Index (RNI) at Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. The index, developed by the World Intellectual Foundation in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru University and IIM Mumbai, ranks countries on how responsibly they govern internally, care for the environment and engage with the world. Singapore topped the inaugural list, with Switzerland and Denmark following; India was placed 16th.
Background
The idea behind the Responsible Nations Index is to shift the focus from measuring national power purely in economic or military terms to evaluating ethical behaviour. The index covers 154 countries across all income groups and uses 58 indicators grouped under three pillars: internal responsibility (good governance and citizen welfare), environmental stewardship and external responsibility (peaceful foreign relations and contribution to global goods). Each pillar is broken down into dimensions such as law and order, social inclusion, ecological footprint and humanitarian aid.
Methodology and rankings
- Comprehensive indicators: The index uses seven dimensions, fifteen aspects and fifty‑eight indicators to capture a country’s performance on ethics and responsibility.
- High performers: Singapore scored highest overall thanks to strong public services, low corruption and effective environmental policies. Switzerland and Denmark followed closely.
- India’s score: With a composite score of 0.55, India ranked 16th, above many larger economies. The report praised India’s judicial independence, vibrant civil society and international peacekeeping contributions but noted challenges in air pollution and bureaucratic efficiency.
Significance
- New benchmark: The RNI provides an alternative lens to evaluate countries, encouraging governments to focus on ethical governance, environmental protection and peaceful international relations.
- Policy guidance: Countries can use the detailed indicators to identify areas for improvement. Civil society groups and citizens may also use the rankings to hold leaders accountable.
- Inspirational value: By highlighting responsible behaviour, the index aims to motivate nations to pursue sustainable development and global cooperation.
Conclusion
The Responsible Nations Index seeks to redefine national success by emphasising moral responsibility over mere economic strength. India’s respectable ranking underscores its progress in democratic governance and global engagement while pointing to areas that need attention.
