Why in news?
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) launched the Project Assessment, Infrastructure Monitoring & Analytics for Nation‑building (PAIMANA) portal to replace its old project monitoring system. Operationalised on 29 January 2026, the web‑based platform aims to improve the oversight of Central Sector Infrastructure Projects costing ₹150 crore or more.
Background
Since 1961, MoSPI has been responsible for monitoring major infrastructure projects to ensure timely execution and cost control. The earlier Online Computerised Monitoring System (OCMS‑2006) had become outdated. PAIMANA integrates data with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade’s Integrated Project Monitoring Portal (IPMP) via APIs, reducing manual entry and promoting the principle of “one data, one entry”.
Key features
- Centralised repository: PAIMANA acts as a national database for projects, enabling ministries, departments and implementing agencies to upload, track and review information through a single window.
- Real‑time dashboards: Interactive dashboards with drill‑down capability allow users to monitor progress by sector, state and timeline. Reports highlight cost overruns, delays and physical completion status.
- Advanced analytics: The portal offers role‑based user access, query modules and automatic alerts to identify data gaps, enabling informed decision‑making.
- Integration with IPMP: About 60% of projects are now updated automatically through integration with the IPMP, reducing duplication of efforts.
- Scope: As of December 2025, 1,392 ongoing projects with a revised cost of ₹35.1 lakh crore had been onboarded, including 585 mega projects (≥₹1,000 crore) and 807 major projects.
Why it matters
- Enhanced transparency helps identify bottlenecks and ensures accountability for large public investments.
- Better data quality supports policy decisions on infrastructure prioritisation and resource allocation.
- The portal aligns with digital‑governance initiatives and may inspire similar systems at state levels.
