Why in news?

On the eve of Republic Day, 25 January 2026, the Government of India announced the recipients of the Padma Awards 2026. A total of 131 individuals and organisations were honoured for their contributions in various fields, including art, public affairs, medicine, literature, social work and sports. The awards recognise exceptional service and inspire citizens by highlighting diverse achievements.

Background

The Padma Awards are among India’s highest civilian honours. Instituted in 1954, they are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (for distinguished service of a high order) and Padma Shri (for distinguished service). Any person can be nominated, and self‑nominations are allowed. A committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary examines the nominations and makes recommendations to the Prime Minister and the President. The awards are announced annually on the eve of Republic Day and presented by the President at a ceremonial function in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
