Why in news?
At the 15th Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, on 30 July 2025, a resolution introduced by India was formally adopted. Titled “Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles for the Wise Use of Wetlands,” the resolution integrates behavioural change into wetland conservation.
What does the resolution propose?
- The resolution urges individuals and communities to adopt pro‑planet choices—such as reducing waste, conserving water and choosing sustainable products—as part of wetland management.
- It calls on countries to incorporate sustainable consumption and production patterns into national and local wetland plans.
- The document aligns with the Ramsar Convention’s communication, education, participation and awareness (CEPA) programme, emphasising education and outreach.
- It encourages governments to form public–private partnerships to mobilise resources and expertise for wetland conservation.
- The resolution builds on India’s domestic Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) and links wetland protection to broader climate and biodiversity goals.
Significance
- By focusing on lifestyles, the resolution moves beyond infrastructure and policy to acknowledge the role of everyday choices in environmental stewardship.
- It elevates India’s profile in global environmental diplomacy, showcasing innovative approaches to linking human behaviour and ecosystem health.
- The resolution supports multiple Sustainable Development Goals, including clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), responsible consumption (SDG 12), climate action (SDG 13), life on land (SDG 15) and partnerships (SDG 17).
- Domestically, it complements initiatives like the Save Wetlands Campaign and Mission Sahbhagita, which engage citizens in wetland restoration.
Conclusion
Wetlands provide critical services such as water purification, flood control and habitat for biodiversity. India’s resolution emphasises that protecting these ecosystems also requires transforming how we live and consume. Global adoption of lifestyle‑based conservation could enhance the effectiveness of wetland protection efforts.
